I think this was just a case of bad luck. There is no way you could have gotten away from quads. On to the next hand!!!

I don't know, I didn't feel too comfortable when the money went in. You really think it's O.K?

Absolutely! And I will give some basic math for you to see why.

The main problem with this particular hand is that your opponent made an extremely loose call from the small blind with a very marginal hand. No doubt playing at this level these types of calls are common so you must widen your opponents hand ranges in these particular games as you will encounter LAG style players the majority of the time.

Your Pre-Flop raise from the BTN may have been interpreted by your opponent as a steal raise which does give him break even odds with a small suited connector should he hit an agreeable flop. Again. Loose Aggressive style play.

With his hand the flop offered him nothing but a flush draw and a weak one considering the paired boared. You could have easily had QQ and flopped a full house, but you flopped quads!! Which is literally a 4,164 to 1 chance mind you. Your bet on the flop was great! Two Thirds the size of the pot give or take, now your opponent is getting 2.4 to 1 pot odds to draw to his flush. Now consider this: if you would have bet say 150 he would have a NEGATIVE EV if he called (and I am sure considering his play thus far he would have called) but as it stands he does have a just the right odds to call you profitably in this spot. Remember: we are assuming your opponent is putting you on AQ or some other hand that is not as strong as he does not know what you have.

Now 4th street brings many interesting things into the mix. The obvious one is that he made his flush, (you should at this point have put him on a draw based on his play thus far) i.e. Check calling on a board with 2 cards of the same suit often implies a flush draw as most players are unwilling to raise in this spot for fear of missing their flush. The 8 of hearts completes his flush but, also gives him additional implied odds because he now has picked up 2 additional NUT outs: the 3 and 7 of hearts.

His bet here does betray his hand, and your raise was the correct play here considering the strength of your hand.

Some odds: you were a 91.6% favorite going to the river, and he was a 22 to 1 dog, he had less than an 8.4% chance of hitting his hand with one card to come.

And I will say that his all in re-raise was so unprofitable that if I were you I would pray to play with him all the time!!

Now here comes the important question: What did you put him on? QQ, KK, AQ, AA? The dynamic of this hand is very complicated as he could and did have 2 random cards. What it boils down is this: you flopped the nuts (basically) your opponent made not one but 3 unprofitable calls in succession and sucked out on you big time.

How would you have played this hand differently?

Personally I would have re-raised him all in on the turn, I think at this point you pushing all in instead of him may have gotten him to fold at least 80-85% of the time. Unless he was holding a stronger hand like QQ, or AA, or AK of hearts specifically.

All in all you played the hand great and he got REALLY lucky, and in the long run if he continues to make these kinds of plays he will be broke more often than not.

Be well man and good hunting!!!

nice analysis George. Good play by Hero, dude hit the only 2 runner-runner cards that could have beat you. Sucks, but as they say "that's poker". Mark this player in your notes as someone you want to seek out for future games.
